Medical TV Shows

This is so random and maybe off topic, but I just can't avoid not talking about it. 

I LOVE TV SHOW THAT DEAL WITH THE MEDICAL FIELD. 

• House
• Grey's Anatomy
• HawthoRNe
• etc...

I'll start with House. This is probably one of the more unrealistic tv shows (or maybe it isn't, I don't know) that is the coolest ever! A doctor solves medical mysteries the way that Sherlock Holmes would solve mysteries. 

UM,  YES PLEASE. 

I would love to be that smart and be able to solve things like that, expect I don't really want to be a doctor, so that's a little awkward.

Grey's Anatomy.

WHO DOES NOT LOVE GREY'S ANATOMY?

Let me just say this is one of my favorite shows ever! Watching this show makes me think that I could become a surgeon and be so good at doing it. It doesn't make me nervous watching the surgeries and all of the cool stuff that they do on there (that is so unrealistic). Anyways, I need to go save a patient now.... PUSH AN EPI!!

Lastly...

HawthoRNe.

So this show I am still new on and not too far into, but there's not much to keep up with because there's only a few seasons. BUT, this show is amazing. It is based on a charge nurse, which is more relate-able since it's nursing,  that is a single mom raising her teen daughter and supervising her nurses while also defending them from the evil, mean doctors who are big and bad (sorry doctors, I still think you're cool in reality). It is nice to watch a show like this just because it is mainly in the nurses' points of view so you can watch what they do and how they have to handle certain situation, either possibly realistic or completely fake. 

But that's all I had to say. If you need medical tv dramas to get hooked on, those are some of my favorites and I totally love them all! Enjoy!

Patience for Patients

Patience is key. 

No, I am not a nurse at all, but yes, I have interned in medical facilities and have a job that is big on customer service. 

When patients are sick (from the perspective of being one), it is very difficult to be nice when you are sick. I usually try to be polite, but if I'm sick and my mom has to talk for me, it can get risky, but those are parents for you. 

From the perspective of someone who works with customer service, I can say that I am sure that it is a little difficult to deal with someone who is not very nice to you. 

You must have patience for your patients. I'm sure this is stressed in nursing schools. 

Those are people who count on you to make them feel better and be able to inform them what is going on with them and what you are doing to fix it. 

Patients determine if they like a hospital or not because of the service that they are given and the manners they are shown. They are your walking advertisements and can determine if you will receive more or less people at that hospital because they are likely to recommend the hospital(s) they like. 

Patience is key. Keep that in mind the next time you are dealing with anyone at any job; it works for anyone anywhere.

Dangers in Nursing

Hey guys, here's another post for you!

I'm not sure if this crosses anyone's mind much, but nursing CAN be dangerous.

I mean just think about it: 

• They deal with needles
• They lift people to move them
• Their job is demanding in the areas of physically, emotionally, and mentally
• They could be exposed to dangerous chemicals and/or substances

By no means is this supposed to scare anyone. 

I just wanted to bring this idea to people's attention. If you are looking into nursing, you should take into consideration if it will be too demanding for you or not. Every career has their own particular demands. 

Nursing is a good career, has a great outlook, and is in demand. Do not let some of the dangers that could come with this scare you off. It's just here to help with your pros and cons list.

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist

Hey guys! I'm going to wrap up finals week with a few blogs!

So in an earlier post, I mentioned all of the different specialties that you could go into, one of them being the one I'm interested in which is CRNA.

To become a nurse anesthetist, you are required to go through graduate school. That's where my blog name comes from, you earn your Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and "specialize" in anesthesia. This usually takes 3 years of school, or more. 

Besides the schooling, I thought I would mention why I am interested in this specialization. 

1. For the obvious reason, I WANT TO GO THROUGH NURSING, YAAAAAY!
2. I personally do not want to go through med school (at least I don't think I do) to become a doctor and become an anesthesiologist. 
3. I get the experience of nursing that I want, the experience of anesthesia that I want, the experience of being around surgeries that I want. Personally, I think this is a complete win-win-win situation. 

My advice to you, is find a specialty that seems interesting, research it, and go for it! (Maybe shadow it, too).

"You're Just A Nurse!"

Oh goodness, it has been awhile! Yay, college. But I will just go ahead and jump right into it. 

As you can see, this post is about one of the most offensive phrases I have ever heard: "You are just a nurse." Right, he or she is a nurse, but not just a nurse, an important nurse. 

I am not sure how common this phrase is in the job field in reality, but it seems to be said or inferred in TV shows a lot. And even though "it's just a TV show" it still kind of pulls some emotions from me. 

Why? 

1. That is just offensive. Nurses go through hard training and education to get where they are today. So if you don't see me walking around saying, "Oh, you're just an intern doctor, not an attending doctor. You're not a real doctor," you wouldn't be offended? 
2. Everyone in the medical field trained to be where they are today. It isn't always the same training or an extensive training, but those people worked in some way shape or form to get where they are. Why is it necessary to offend anyone, including nurses?
3. Nurse are there to take care of patients. Some doctors cannot stay long and have to give a diagnosis and then go to the next patient and continue their rounds. Nurses stay with patients and care for patients and do everything the patients need or want (appropriately). They're not "just a nurse". If they didn't do their job with care, there would be more people in this world who would really hate going to hospitals. 

PLEASE be respectful to your fellow coworkers or your fellow nurse. They are human, too, and no one wants to be told that they are doing a bad job or they are not good enough for their job. Everyone deserves to be happy. Be courteous to them.
