"Why do you want to be a nurse?"

Have you ever been asked, "Why do you want to be a nurse?" 

I'm sure you have. I have at least. It's a common question, and with that, comes a common answer. 

"Because I want to help people."

NOTE: I'm not putting offense to this answer, it is a good state of mind. You shouldn't go into a nursing career (necessarily) if you do not want to help people. 

BUT...

Why else do you want to become a nurse? Why do you want to help people? It wasn't until I got asked this question that I wasn't sure what other reasons I had. (That's not a bad thing, but most people have specific reasons on why.) 

Although at the time I seemed clueless, it wasn't until I started thinking about my history with hospitals that I knew why exactly I wanted to become a nurse. 

My mom has medical issues that need tending to every other day of the week. When I was 9, I had a medical issue that wasn't even solved until after a few weeks, maybe months later. 

So why do I want to become a nurse?

Because all (or most) of the nurse I have dealt with (either for myself or my mom) have all been super nice and they did their job well. I want that. I want to impact someone's life like that so they, too, can remember when someone helped them in the most positive way possible. 

I want to be like one of my mom's nurses. He makes everything easier. He constantly cracks jokes and makes us laugh. He has an easy-going personality and he was easy to talk to and approach the moment that we met him. 

I want to impact people's lives, I want to make a difference. I want to help put people at ease and not make them so freaked out about being in a hospital. I want to be someone's heroes like the nurses I had were to me. (And the doctors, they were cool too!) 

Some many people look down on nurses as if their job is not important, but without them, most people wouldn't get the love and care that they need or even want. I want to give that to people. I want them to know that I genuinely care and that I genuinely want to help them.

What Opportunities Does Nursing Bring?

Hi everyone! Sorry for not posting lately!

My family came to see me in college last weekend and it was the most exciting time of my life. I missed them so much!!

But besides that point, let's go into some things about, the one and only, NURSING. YAAAAY.

So, for anyone out there in nursing or looking towards nursing, you know that there are SO many opportunities out there and quite a few different things that you can do with a nursing degree.

So far I have looked at becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetic and focusing on obstetrics (if that's possible). Currently my goals, butttt it might change (or not, who knows).

Now, if I would have never done some research on what I could do with a nursing degree, I would have never considered nursing or gotten so specific as that. ISN'T THAT COOL? I think it's cool. There is such a wide variety that you could (hopefully) never get bored with it, and I love that!

ANYWAYS...

I encourage all of you to look at all of the opportunities and specialties that are there in the world. Even if it isn't for nursing, you should still look!

Some of the things I have seen and (possibly) thought about doing with a nursing degree are:

• Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
• Emergency Room
• Birthing and Labor
• ETC...

THERE ARE SO MANY OPPORTUNITIES. I believe everyone can find something they enjoy in this world and not dread going to work. It is everyone's goal to BE HAPPY.

Look for things that interest you; gain experience in your newest idea (like volunteer, shadow, intern, etc.); go out of your comfort zone for a second, it might surprise you. BE HAPPY, BE YOU.

Nursing Programs

Hi all!!

I'm here today to discuss (maybe ask as well) one of the most common questions from some nursing students/nurses: Why is it so difficult to get into a nursing program?

I wish I could answer that question, but I can't. Although, I completely agree with other students that it is a difficult process to get into a nursing program. You have to have the grades and then also compete for one seat when most programs only accept 50 at a time....

WHY IS THIS?

I understand some schools don't need to accept more than 50 students at a time, but some schools should accept more than 50. A few programs I looked at shared that they get anywhere from 150-300+ applications but only accept 50 a year. Again, why? Nursing is one of THE MOST demanding jobs in this world and I think a big reason of that comes from the toughness of trying to get accepted into a program.

It would be nice if it was an easier process, but I guess that probably won't change for awhile. And, of course, I am the type of person who likes challenging tasks. This is probably one of the reasons why I chose nursing and also a most definite on why I will be applying, again, for the nursing program.

My fellow nursing students- past, present, and/or future- don't ever give up on your dreams. Keep trying and keep fighting for what you want to do with your life. (For someone like me, I have to get accepted into a program to get my BSN and then, years later, get accepted into a program for my DNP. It is my dream!)

You all can do it and I know I can do it, too. But it takes a lot of hard work and a lot of perseverance.

If you ever find the answer of why schools don't like to take in more than 50 students a year or if they will ever increase that number, help a girl out and share some info with me!

The New College Life

Hi guyysssss!! I'm Ke'Shauna, aka the future "Doctor of Nursing Practice" student.

Have you ever met a college student who was for sure about what they wanted to do with their life?

Yeah, me either.

But, this is my current mindset! I want to go into the medical field, but I don't want to be a doctor, but I also don't want to be a nurse the whole time either. I want to make big shots and make big calls and do big things. So, a doctorate in nursing is my latest thing that sounds amazing and fitting for me. (Probably the only thing I've been sure about lately.)

Besides that point, let's talk about college..... YAY.

I am in my third week of college and boy, is it a ride. No parents, so much freedom, so many friends!!

.....and a lot of homework.

I'm proud of myself, though. I haven't cried since the first week of classes. (Yes, I am that girl who was best friends with her mom. Okay.)

But there is so much ahead of me and such a great future lying ahead of me, and I can't wait to go on this journey of college and majoring in nursing.

Maybe a lot of people will read this, maybe no one will read this, but I'm excited to share my journey to whoever comes across this.
